About the Institute
This Institute was established in the year from 1963 in IMPCOPS, Chennai with a motive to study the phyto-chemical aspects of medicinal plants in an around the city. Later Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homeopathy had taken over this Institute as grant in aid. In the year of 1979, this institute became a part of Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (formerly Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic and Siddha). This institute had diversified its activities to drug standardization besides phyto-chemical studies. This institute concentrates in formulating SOP and drug standardization of medicines belonging to Ayurveda and Siddha. This is the only institute which had been extended with license as Drug Testing Laboratory (DTL) for testing of Ayurveda and Siddha drugs by the Drug controller of Tamil Nadu (Indian System of Medicine). This is the only Institute under the Ministry of AYUSH accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), under the department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. This institute is recognized as Ph.D centre by University of Madras. Land measuring 7200 Sq.ft was purchased by the Institute which is adjacent to the existing building of CCRS (Central Council for Research in Siddha). The vacant land was utilized to construct ground and three floors. The work was entrusted to CPWD and they have completed the work. The total constructed area is around 30000 Sq.ft. This institute had Chemistry, Botany/Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacy departments and Library section. Besides, the Institute has animal house facility approved by the committee for the purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA), Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, to conduct animal studies. The laboratories are equipped sophisticated instruments/equipments to carry out the studies. The Institute was renamed as Captain Srinivasa Murthy Central Ayurveda Research Institute in Dec 2020.

Activities
a. Chemistry
The department is engaged in isolation of chemical markers from plant drugs and analysis of drugs from plant, metal and mineral origin. The drugs are identified and analyzed by using instrumentation such as UV, IR, Polarimeter, HPTLC, GC, LC-MS/MS, HPLC techniques to develop finger printing profile of raw drugs, ingredients and compound formulations. Qualitative and quantitative estimations of chemical markers, active constituents of drugs carried out. There are a large number of tests that are carried out, which pave the way for laying physic-chemical and phyto-chemical parameters for the single drug/finished products. Apart from this, heavy metal content of the drugs also studied using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS)
b. Pharmacology
The animal house facility (approximately 6000 Sq.ft) situated in the ground floor as per CPCSEA/GLP norms. The institute carryout the toxicological and pharmacological screening of AYUSH drugs. The studies undertaken in the department are acute, sub-acute and chronic toxicity studies and efficacy studies.
c. Biochemistry
The department carryout haematological and biochemical evaluation of the samples using sophisticated instruments like Digital Cell counter, Clinical Chemistry Auto analyser, urine analyser etc. In-vitro analysis of the samples also studied.
d. Microbiology
It is imperative to check whether the raw drugs that are used in the preparation of medicines are free from microbial contamination. The above work is carried out by the department. Further the anti microbial potency of the drug compared with the modern drug and studied shelf life of the drugs.
e. Botany/Pharmacognosy
The department involves the raw drugs of plant origin are procured/collected from the market and other areas were deposited. Macroscopic and microscopic studies are being carried out to establish authencity of the raw drug before being used in the preparation of drugs. The department maintains the reference specimen of the samples in herbarium and museum.
f. Pharmacy
The department involves the preparation of Ayurveda formulations. The formulations are prepared in different batches with raw drugs collected from different regions of the country in order to establish the standards for the product. In-process quality control checks and in-house quality standards are being developed.
Achievements
a. NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BOARD FOR TESTING AND CALIBRATION LABORATORIES (NABL)
The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories is an international agency which extends accreditation to laboratories. This institute has been accorded with NABL accreditation for chemical and biological scope.
b. Drug Testing Laboratory
The drug controller of Tamilnadu had accorded license to this institute for testing Ayurveda and Siddha drugs. This facility is used by many manufacturers and researchers at large.

d. Honours and Awards
The staffs of this institute have contributed much to the Indian System of Medicine. The contribution made by the staff had won awards and honours from various institutions. The first of this kind was the adjudication of the institute as being the pioneer institute engaged in the research and standardization of Ayurveda drugs. Many of the staff is in receipt of contribution in the field of herbal drug research. One of the scientists of the institute was awarded CDRI excellence award 2004 for the best contribution to the development of traditional system of medicine. Till date, the institute is in receipt of 8 gold medals, six best paper awards and six cash awards for their contribution to the field of herbal drug research. In the year 2007 one of the scientists was honoured with the P.D. Sethi award for the best paper in HPTCL techniques, and in 2003 and 2009 received Indian Drugs Manufacturers Award for the research articles published in Indian Drugs. One scientist received Dr. Hardyal singh best paper award for Indian Pharmacology society during 2015. The institute award shield along with certificate of consolation position of the best performance in the progress use of official language during 2014-2015.
e. Publications
About 450 research papers have been published in various National and International Journals and about 150 scientific papers have been presented in various scientific seminars, conferences and symposia. The work carried out in the institute has been included in various publications of the department AYUSH and ICMR.

f. Training and Guidance
The institute is recognised by University of Madras and Sri Ramachandra University to guide Ph.D. So far this institute had produced one doctor of science and 37 Ph.D. The above degrees were awarded in the different field of chemistry, pharmacy, botany, pharmacology and biochemistry. Besides the students doing dissertation for PG studies are being guided.
g. Collaboration
Being a pioneer in the field of herbal research the institute has collaboration with many institutions. Outside India this institute has collaboration with department of chemistry, University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK. In India the institute collaborates with the university college of science, Kolkata and institutions like ICMR, IGCAR, CEERI, CLRI, and IIT Chennai.
