National Vrkshayuuveda Research Institute (NVARI) Jhansi established in the year 1973, renamed as Central Ayurveda Research Institute in Dec 2020, is engaged in the research with the focus mandate, i. conduct medicio-botanical exploration in parts of Central India ii. Collect and supply genuine raw drug materials for R&D work iii. To build up repositories for medicinal plants and crude drugs iv. To established herbal garden and carrying out cultivation of medicinal plants for Ayurveda. The Institute has developed a good herbarium where more than 24000 accessioned specimens of 205 families, 1129 genera and 2563 species are housed and maintained. The herbarium has been registered with index herbariorum and allotted the acronym JHS. The Institute has also developed a crude drugs repository where 700 genuine and market samples of crude drugs used in Indian system of medicine are preserved. The Institute is maintaining the herbal garden ca 10 acres of land where more than 314 species of medicinal plants are maintained since inception. Ca 180 medicinal plants species are maintained in demo garden of the Institute. Mass cultivation of some important medicinal plants like Saraca asoca (Roxb.) De Wilde, Withania somnifera Dunal, Desmodium gangeticum DC., Pluchea lanceolata C.B. Clarke, Tinosphora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.f. & Thoms, Barleria cristata L., Centella asiatica (L.) Urban, Asparagus racemosus Willd., Hemidesmus indicus R.Br., Aloe barbedensis Mill., Operculina turpethum (Linn.). Silva Manso , Terminalia arjuna (Roxb.) W. & A., Uraria picta Desv.

Research Project Under Going

Medico-botanical survey of Eastern part of Uttar Pradesh is under progress. Effect of Pongamia pinnata, Wrightia tinctoria, Ipomoea carnea and Azadirachta indica leaf on the growth and yield of Pisum sativum L. and Cicer arietinum L. is under study. IMR Project "To establish the best procurement time for certain herbs by analyzing the seasonal variation in bioactive secondary metabolite with quantitative HPLC" is under progess. Central herbarium of CCRAS has been established at NVARI, Jhansi. Establishment of Pharmacy and Quality Control Lab at NVARI, Jhansi is under progress.

The Institute has conducted medico-botanical surveys in about 36 forest divisions so far. Recently forest areas of Rajasthan, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have been explored. More than 250 folklore claims and about 1500 color photographs have been taken. Special emphasis was given to collect API and AFI enlisted plants although other plants were also collected according to there availability. Transect belt method was adopted and GPS DATA was also included which each field book no.

Recently Mass cultivation of Saraca asoca (Roxb.) De Wilde, Curcuma aromatica Salisb., Curcuma cassia Roxb., Oroxylum indicum Vent., Adenanthera pavonina Linn. is in progress. 10,000 saplings of Acorus calamus Linn. are ready for cultivation in NVARI, Garden. This year Institute has supplied approximately 51.3kg crude drugs to various Research Institute of the Council.

Research Publications

Institute has contributed in 12 research monographs and recently this year about 10 research papers has been published in National and International Journals so far.

Participation in Seminars

Institute Officers have participated in more than 5 seminars this year and presented oral/poster papers.
