VISIT TO UCLA INSTITUTES

  • Centre for Human Nutrition engaged in analytical studies on many plants used in Ayurveda.
  • Centre for Dietary Supplements Research in Botanicals including many plants used in Ayurveda.

After formal welcome by Dr. John L. Fahey and Dr. Adey Nyamathi, discussions were held on health care delivery and health research issues related to India. The honourable Minister talked about the health policy and focus of the government on maternal and child health through ASHA and NRHM programmes.

 

The Honourable Minister also focused on various related issues of HIV/AIDS, Nutritional research where AYUSH has potential and strength. The faculty members and officials of UCLA have expressed their interest in working in India to carry out collaborative research with AYUSH Research Councils in selected areas viz. HIV/AIDS, Quality of Life Improvement, nutritional supplements etc.

21.09.07 VISITS AT WASHINGTON DC

A) Discussion with Dr. Navin Shah, Diplomat American Board of Urology, Diplomat American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, 4404 Queensbury Road, Suite 240, Riverdale, Maryland 20737.

After a formal reception to Honourable MOS (H & FW), Dr. Navin Shah spoke about the various Indian projects and need for introduction of various novel concepts for the betterment of healthcare in India viz. Initiation of a two year PG programme on infectious diseases, Ayurveda education in US medical schools: accreditation of hospitals in India, etc.


B) Luncheon meeting Ambassador Ronen Sen at the Embassy Residence (2700 Macomb Street, NW, Washington DC, 20008).

Different Issues related to health care system, AYUSH related matters and their promotion were discussed. The Honourable Minister has presented a set of literature of AYUSH Department to Sh. Ronen Sen, Ambassador of India in USA.


C) Visit to National Institute of Child Health and Human Development National Institute of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on September 21, 2007 at 2:00 - 3:00 P.M. in Building 31 Center Drive, Room 2A03.

A meeting was held with Dr. Alexander, Director, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to discuss various related issues particularly on Maternal and Child Health. After a formal welcome to the Honourable Minister, the Director, NICHD spoke about various RCH related issues and projects which are related to India. The Honourable Minister has informed the gathering about various health policies and initiatives related to Maternal and Child Health in India, particularly about NRHM and ASHA Programmes.

 

She has also highlighted the potential and inclusion of AYUSH in health care services particularly in the maternal and child health sector. She has also outlined other potential areas for mutual collaboration. The faculty members and scientists displayed interest in collaborating with India in the field of RCH, Nutraceuticals, Mental health in children (memory & cognitive functions), Obesity, and HIV/AIDS etc.

 

D) WHO working group meeting on clinical studies on traditional medicines at Milan, Italy


Dr. Sulochana Bhat, Research Officer (Ay.),CCRAS , participated in the WHO Working Group Meeting on Clinical Studies on Traditional Medicines held from 30th  March to 1st April, 2009 at Milan, Italy . The main objective of the meeting was to publish a compiled document on clinical trials on phytotherapies by the WHO. The publication is proposed to facilitate the work of researchers, academicians and policy makers with the better understanding of evidence base of the traditional medicines.  The group consisted of representatives from China, Japan, USA, UK. UAE, Australia, Italy, Germany, South Korea, Norway.  Dr. Xiaourui Zhang, Coordinator, Traditional Medicine, WHO Hqs. Geneva and other scientists and officers from WHO Hqs. were present in the meeting.
The meeting had following outcomes:
·    Draft outline and content of the document was prepared.
·    A guideline for the search, selection, evaluation and presentation  of data was framed.
·    The time frame and the working procedure for the publication of the document were projected.

 

Dr. Sulochana apprised the committee of the status of research in India. The valuable inputs from Indian perspective were provided to the group. The possible role of India specially compiling and reviewing the clinical trials of Indian traditional medicines in bringing out the publication was also discussed by the group in detail.
